Dry summer conditions, hot weather and lightening coming together as the perfect wildfire storm.
So many communities have been affected by the wildfires sweeping across the Northwest Territories. Evacuations and communication disruptions now becoming the norm. With no end in sight to so many of these fires Rae's Research Team left the Territories. From Rae - we had the privilege, capacity and ability to leave, with all our belongings before the situation got worse. A privilege that many folks do not have. We drove for two days down the Dempster Highway, where we saw more wildfires along the road, trees on both sides charred. It's honestly devastating to see this sweep through the landscape. This month we shed light on the ongoing wildfires throughout the North and the evacuation of Yellowknife, the Territory's capital. The photo to the left was taken on the Dempster Highway headed towards Inuvik, approx. 5 km from town, visibility is less than 100m due to smoke from the Noell Lake fire. |
